·Jejuoileal bypass. Now a rarely performed procedure, Jejuoileal bypass involves shortening the small intestine. Because of the high occurrence of serious complications involving chronic diarrhea and liver disease, it has largely been abandoned for the other, safer procedures.

Post-operative care after Obesity Surgery:

Immediately after the operation, most patients are restricted to a liquid diet for two to three weeks; however, some may remain on it for up to 12 weeks. Patients then move on to a diet of pureed food for about a month, and, after about two months, most can tolerate solid food. High fat food is restricted because it is hard to digest and causes diarrhea. Patients are expected to work on changing their eating and exercise habits to assist in weight loss. Most people eat three to four small meals a day once they return to solid food. Eating too quickly or too much after obesity surgery can cause nausea and vomiting as well as intestinal “dumping, ” a condition in which undigested food is shunted too quickly into the small intestine, causing pain, diarrhea, weakness, and dizziness.

Smart Lipo – Smarter for Stubborn Fatty Areas Than Liposuction

Fat. It’s part of the human condition. It accumulates under our skin, especially as we get older, right where we don’t want it. Diet and exercise can really help, and they’re good for our general health, too, so they’re the first line of attack against overweight. But sometimes even the high-power gym types, the folks who work out all the time, simply can’t get rid of those lumpy, fatty areas. Many of my patients are asking me about a new treatment they’re hearing about, called “Smart Lipo.”


What is Smart Lipo? It’s laser liposuction, and it’s a new method of “body sculpting” for fatty areas. It’s not a solution for overweight or a replacement for other treatments addressing larger areas that need reduction. Alternatives for a patient like this, in the past, have included surgery – for instance, the procedure called the tummy tuck. Or a cosmetic dermatologist might have recommended traditional liposuction. The advantages of laser liposuction over both of these procedures include avoiding general anesthesia and the recovery process associated with that. Tummy tuck surgery generally involves loosening and redraping the skin. Both procedures are considered invasive, and they are more than a patient like this one needs for a localized fat problem. Standard liposuction can also leave grooves and ripples on the surface of the loosened skin, giving patients less improvement in appearance than they hoped for.


Laser liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure, done in the office under local anesthesia. Here’s how it works: laser energy targets the fat cells and liquefies them. They are then withdrawn with super-fine tubes. The laser energy also seals off fine blood vessels, reducing blood leakage and bruising in the tissues. No stitches are necessary, and there’s minimal scarring. This procedure also stimulates collagen production and causes a tightening of the skin over the area, another benefit over regular liposuction. After the procedure, the patient wears a compression garment for a week or two.


Smart Lipo is a low-pain procedure, accomplished in a relatively short amount of time. Recovery time is less than with standard liposuction, usually a day or two as opposed to a week. Many patients see the results they want after a single treatment.


“Is it safe?” my client wanted to know. The record is very good; Smart Lipo has been in widespread use for several years in Europe and South America, and the FDA approved it here in the US over a year ago.


That’s what I told this client about Smart Lipo, and it’s what I’m telling others who ask. Losing weight is a lot more simple than even the simplest plans try to make out – It all boils down to basic physics. The logic that the number of calories entering your body needs to be less than calories put out is something seemingly intuitive, but it is surprisingly often ignored. The problem with most diet plans is they ignore the differences in a person’s metabolism and natural resting rate of calories burned. This is very easy to calculate, and in fact, doesn’t need to be “calculated” at all.

The first thing you need to determine is the average amount of calories you take in per day. Simply take a few days and record on paper the calories you eat. This might seem like a nuisance at first, but once you eventually see results, it becomes second nature. The calories will be available (per serving) on the back of mostly everything you eat or drink.

After you get a few days recorded, find the average calories taken in per day. For our purposes, this is the roughly the amount of calories your body takes in to maintain your current weight. This knowledge is powerful and surprisingly unknown to many trying to lose weight.

Now what? Cut down on calories. Yes, it’s really that simple. You might be thinking “well of course”, however, most people trying to do a method similar to this do it haphazardly and either count incorrectly, or use an arbitrary model of an average person’s daily caloric intake (remember those estimated recommended daily calorie counts on nutrition labels?).

How to go about cutting down on calories is also important. The first thing you need to cut down in your diet is sugar.

Sugar is incredibly fattening. Once in your body, it triggers an insulin response and almost immediately gets stored as fat. Foods that are high in starch and simple carbohydrates, such as potatoes and very processed grains, will have a similar response. Some diets instruct you to eat more whole grains and protein. This is the reason behind it.

For example, if you eat an average of 2900 calories per day and a reduction in sugary and starchy foods (such as soda and sugary juices) cuts your daily calorie count to 2700, you will steadily lose weight.

If a several hundred calorie reduction doesn’t help you lose weight, try a hundred more until you’re happy with the pace you’re going.

In order to cope with the lack of sugars (and fats, which are calorie rich), increase the intake of protein. This will also help you retain muscle mass as you drop pounds.

It’s a good idea to time your meals to ingest carbs and fats early and midday, and protein at night. This will allow your body all day to burn off the carbs and fat, leaving you protein at night to fill you up and preserve muscle while your body burns off some weight.

Diet pills are often advertised as being a sort of miracle cure. Many people try them and stop after a few weeks, not seeing results.
